Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of the former president's move to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which included plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
