Can You Crack It? The Overlooked Netherlands Invention Which Forged our Modern Globe
There are many candidates for the title of “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
As per a recent publication, however, that title should go to the mechanised sawmill conceived by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, building a simple trading ship required around 10 sawyers laboring over three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven sawmills, an identical quantity of processed timber might be produced in less than a week.”
Thanks to their speedy automated cutter, that turned logs to boards using almost no human effort, Dutch builders could build ships more quickly compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed a century of Netherlands naval, financial and artistic supremacy across the continent and the world.
The First Genuine Industrial Machine
The inventor's sawmill, argues Dávila, was “mankind’s first authentic industrial apparatus.” A wind turbine turned a gear. A single part converted its rotary motion into vertical motion to power the saw. A separate mechanism transformed that same spinning movement into a lateral movement feeding the log toward the cutter. A geared mechanism shifted the wood ahead a measured step each cycle.
“Every component seemed modest on its own. The Dutchman’s brilliance was to combine them so they operated within a perfectly controlled order, sawing with each downward motion while moving on every upward motion. This constituted a remarkably intelligent use of fundamental parts.”
