Man City Three-Nil The Red Devils: Lauren Hemp on target in City stroll.
Much like bad weather tore through the north-west the night before, Manchester City blew United away at the their home ground. It was a emphatic three goal win for their manager's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that firmly established their leadership claims as they consolidated their standing at the WSL pinnacle.
Successive Defeats for United
This scoreline signalled successive league setbacks for Skinner's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.
United’s capability to juggle domestic and continental soccer with a limited roster has been a frequently analyzed issue since they earned a place in the Champions League. Looking at the calendar, it always appeared this was the period that would seriously challenge this ability. Sadly for the visitors, they appeared weary throughout, the historic win against the French side clearly having had an impact.
Team Changes
The United manager had attempted to freshen things up with a handful of alterations. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all brought freshness, although the exclusion of the in-form Melvine Malard to the bench was questioned.
City, in contrast, have fewer loading issues. Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since recovering from injury.
Commanding Opening Period
The pressure started to accumulate for the United boss and his team from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the quality from City whose potent forward line played with and pulled the visitors apart with a superb initial 45 minutes performance that saw them score three goals in 21 minutes.
This put the hosts completely dominant and saw the visitors struggling. Before this encounter, United had let in just a handful in this WSL season but they fell apart in the presence of the hosts' offensive ingenuity.
Early Chances
The early indicators came early when Miedema used her strength to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the heart of everything early on, taking advantage of the gap left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' wing. Her crosses were creating danger and led to an chance for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg cleared off the line.
United had multiple forays forwards, their long-ball tactic giving them choices in the wings but they could not trouble Yamashita. City, in the meantime, commanded the ball, teasing their opposition and trying to pull them out of their structure.
Scoring Spree
They made their pressure count with almost the first period played when Fujino won the hosts a corner. A cross to the back post was headed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's 7th goal from a cross of the season.
They added to their lead with another pair of goals just before the break. When Rose was able to advance through the midfield from defense, the pitch became spacious for City. The influential Casparij received possession on the wing before sending a pinpoint ground pass for Bunny Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a quick turnover in the ball saw Hemp allowed the room to strike a shot home from outside the box.
Second Half
The most obvious adjustment came from the United manager at the interval as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to alter the outcome of the game. Former City player Jess Park came closest, rattling the upright, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to register a solitary shot on target.
The home side, on the other hand, could have increased their lead when a delightful Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the hosts. Having failed to overcome any side who ended above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against Arsenal and United to place them in a favorable situation after nine matches.
