During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his term.

A Historic Leader

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
